Sleepy dormice: The illustrations of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party are by John Tenniel, and the stained glass window is by Geoffrey Webb. It’s in All Saints’ Church in the village of Daresbury, in Cheshire, which was Lewis Carroll’s birthplace.

Artists and filmmakers! Keep this in mind next time you are adapting Alice in Wonderland and are going to depict the Dormouse. It’s not a house mouse or a field mouse or any of the common kinds of mice you will find in Europe or North America. Mice and dormice share the scientific order Rodentia, but mice are in the suborder Myomorpha along with rats, hamsters, and mole rats, while dormice are in the suborder Sciuromorpha and are more closely related to squirrels, chipmunks, prairie dogs, and beavers.

I learned so much about rodents today!

rhamphotheca: Slumbering Dormice
It’s that time of the year again when many of our native species are beginning to hibernate.
A popular species amongst those hibernating is the hazel dormouse. These adorable little mammals are agile climbers and as they are mainly nocturnal are very rarely seen. Living in deciduous woodland, hedgerows and dense scrub, they can spend their entire lives up in the branches without ever touching the ground. The hazel dormouse will eat buds, hazelnuts, berries and insects. Dormice, their breeding sites and their resting places are fully protected; interaction with them is prohibited without a licence. So we ask that if you see one please do not disturb it in anyway. To find out more about the hazel dormouse, follow the link: http://ow.ly/qxjIPPhoto: ©Cath Shellswell via: Somerset Wildlife Trust
